About

Pentra has been a leading Employee Benefits firm since our founding in 1987. We focus on improving the financial and operational performance of health care and employee benefits programs for mid-sized and large employers.

In 2016, Pentra helped to create Alera Group, an independent national insurance and financial services firm. We did this through a merger of 24 like-minded, high-performing firms. All Pentra owners continue to be active in the business as partners in Alera. Our mission is to enhance our client’s experience by providing a greater depth and breadth of resources, innovative thinking and constant collaboration. Now, almost three years after creating Alera Group, we are retiring the Pentra name. We are not retiring our Pentra values.

Our goal as Alera Group is the same as it was as Pentra: deliver the best possible outcomes—positively impacting our employees, clients, communities and the lives of people where we serve. We continue to set a higher standard for the client experience by providing the enhanced resources, technical experience and best practices of a larger firm. We will continue to deliver personal service and the independent decision-making power of a local business.

There is a level of excitement at Alera that our employees and clients see and experience every day. Our people care about their clients, they care about each other and they care about making a difference.

Our Expertise

Design

We approach plan design with an experience-based, deep understanding of how plan structure impacts utilization, employee engagement, desired clinical outcomes and cost. Alera Group believes that design is the foundation of every benefit plan.

Funding

When it comes to funding your employee benefit program, we negotiate premiums, fees and expenses with insurers and vendors as if it were our own money. Our internal motto is: “If you would not be willing to pay for it yourself, then don’t recommend it to a client.” We help establish a comprehensive budget for our clients and then present creative approaches to minimize expense such as alternative risk arrangements and employee cost sharing approaches.

Administration

Administration impacts the employee experience, cost and compliance. While it typically represents a relatively small portion of the benefit budget, it should be considered an integral part of overall delivery. Effective administration rarely receives compliments. However, when an error occurs, such as employee having their coverage denied, or if there is a breach of data privacy or a compliance failure, administration is often to blame.

Communication

Benefit plan costs often represent the second largest employee expense after direct compensation. When making such a substantial investment, helping employees and their families understand, utilize and appreciate the programs is essential.
